OEM vs ODM vs Private Label: A Firelighter Buying Guide

Who owns the design, the tooling and the brand, and the questions that settle it before you commit.

Three terms get used interchangeably in firelighter sourcing and describe three different commercial positions. The difference is not vocabulary. It decides who owns the design if you change supplier, who pays for tooling, whose name is on the pack, and how long it takes to reach a first production run.

This guide separates them, shows where a rice-straw manufacturer such as Ulstraw actually sits, and gives you the questions to ask before a sample request rather than after a purchase order.

The short answer

OEM means you bring a finished design and the factory builds to it. ODM means the factory already owns a working product and adapts it to you. Private label is a branding decision layered on either one: the goods carry your brand rather than the manufacturer's. Ulstraw operates as an ODM and private-label partner.

The difference in one table

OEMODMPrivate label
Who designs the productYou. The factory builds to your drawing and formulation. The manufacturer. You select from and adapt an existing product.Either — it sits on top of an OEM or ODM arrangement.
Who owns formulation and toolingNormally you, and it should be written down. The manufacturer, who supplies it to several customers.Follows whichever model sits underneath.
Whose brand is on the packYours, usually.Yours or the manufacturer’s, depending on the deal.Yours, always. That is the definition.
What you sendSpecification, drawings, formulation, artwork.A brief: market, channel, pack count, label language.Print-ready artwork and a barcode.
Time to a first runLongest — the product has to be developed.Shortest — the product already exists. As short as artwork approval takes.
What moves if you change supplierThe design moves with you.It does not. You are re-sourcing a product, not a drawing. The brand moves; the product may not.
Where Ulstraw sitsNot offered today.Yes — pressed cubes and bars of rice straw and candle wax.Yes — pack count, packaging, label language and carton adapted to your market.

The row that costs buyers money is the second from last. Under ODM you are buying access to somebody else’s product; if the relationship ends, your brand can move but the product does not. That is not a reason to avoid ODM — it is the reason it is fast and cheap to start. It is a reason to price the switching cost honestly at the beginning, and to keep your artwork, your barcode and your market registrations in your own name.

Where a rice-straw manufacturer fits

Ulstraw’s position is ODM plus private label. The body of the product is fixed — field-dried rice straw compressed and sealed with candle wax, in cube or bar format — and what adapts to you is the pack count, the packaging, the label language and the carton configuration for your market. If you need the composition itself changed, that is an OEM conversation, and it is not what this line does today.

The sampling route is published as four steps, each naming what you send and what comes back. The durations are the honest gap in the programme: they are open questions until they are confirmed, and they are shown as such rather than guessed.

StepWhat you sendWhat you receiveDuration
01 BriefTarget market, sales channel, pack count, label language and any compliance requirement you already know of.A written note saying which parts of the brief the current line can meet, and which it cannot. On request — ask in your brief
02 SampleA shipping address, plus your artwork or a reference pack if you have one.Physical samples of the chosen format in stock packaging, with pack weights and dimensions in writing. On request — ask in your brief
03 ConfirmPrint-ready artwork, barcode, final pack count and the order quantity.A pre-production sample of your own pack, the specification sheet, and the quoted price and lead time.On request — ask in your brief
04 ProduceWritten approval of the pre-production sample, and the purchase order. The production batch, packing list and export documentation, ready for collection in Vietnam. On request — ask in your brief

Fourteen questions to ask before you sample

They are ordered so that a supplier who cannot answer the first four is not worth sampling.

  1. Which model are you offering me — OEM, ODM, or private label on top of your own product?
  2. What is the minimum order quantity, per SKU and per production run?
  3. What is the lead time from approved artwork to goods ready for collection?
  4. What is your monthly capacity on this line, and how much of it is already committed?
  5. What exactly is in the product, by name, and is that composition published anywhere my compliance team can read it?
  6. Which of your published performance figures are manufacturer statements, and which are test results?
  7. If they are test results, who ran the test and against which protocol?
  8. Which documents can you supply today, and which are conditional on the destination market?
  9. Who owns the artwork, the barcode and the print files at the end of the relationship?
  10. Which markets have you already shipped this product to?
  11. What is the shelf life, and what evidences it?
  12. What are the pack and carton dimensions, and the weight per carton?
  13. What happens to a batch that fails your own internal check — who is told, and when?
  14. Which of the answers above will you put into the specification sheet that travels with the order?

Question five is the one that separates a manufacturer from a trading company. Ulstraw’s answers to questions two, three and four are open at the time of writing and shown as such above; the composition, formats, pack configurations and markets already served are published on the ODM programme page. For the product-level detail first, start with the category primer for buyers; the pack-level specification is on the 100 Cubes product page.

If you are evaluating Ulstraw as a supplier, start with the ODM and private-label programme page: it carries the current specification table, the four-step sampling process and the documentation list.
